we went to a medieval festival today in Manderscheid and it was a lot of fun. Here are the many pictures from our fun day!
This is what we saw going into the Manderschied castle....The boys love snails.
THe music was AMAZING!! This guys could play a ton of different instruments and they were all the old folk music. My favorite was the kind of music you would hear in an movie back in these times with people holding hands and dancing and laughing in a circle jumping up in down in their dance. It was so fun to hear. Loved it.
Yes my two little knights could not escape the festivities without a Sword!
...scabbard and all :)
View from castle ruins
The festivities below...
Top of the picture is where they did the jousting, knight competitions and sword fighting
A cool cellar window
They had kids on stick horses doing the same things as the knights were......A European Rodeo :)
Castle ruins across the way
The birds..... Can't have a medieval fest without a falconer
The knights tents....and believe me some were DECKED out!
Like this one :)
Jousting sticks
A battle scene
The 'Bad' guy.... of course... he's wearing black
Knights!!!
This was just too fun :)
In a way it was like a rodeo...not the bucking horses but horsemen having competitions with one another in events that pertained to fighting while on horseback. There were a lot of things they did. (Some I don't have names for) They acted out a story of the good Manderscheid knights and the bad attitude knights from somewhere else. It was all in German so I got what was going on from the acting. They did jousting and many other events like taking a pointed stick and ramming it into an object (styrophome wrapped in cloth) while full speed on their horses, hitting each other off theirhorses with these big bean bags with ropes to hold onto, and others. It was fun to watch. It was just so neat to actually be in a place where this really happened. It poured rain on us a few times in between spurts of sunshine. Gotta love it!
WE were headed out and I saw this guy and had to take a picture with him. Gideon's not excited at all :)
Nymphs
A rest stop on the way home
Bridger the great Hunter!!
On our way home we found a beautiful place we went and walked around
Monastery Himmerod
This is the link to information about this monastery I am still learning about. Today there are 13 monks in the monastery Himmerod. It was huge and beautiful.
These are the souveniers we collected while at the festival....
I got myself a leather diary that is Beautiful... I have always liked things like this but when I saw it I couldn't pass it up. The guy who makes them is very talented. I love smelling it...Fresh leather and homemade paper. I love that smell
